Amalie “Emmy” Noether: Why she kicks ass
- Albert Einstein called her the most “significant” and “creative” female mathematician of all time, and others of her contemporaries were inclined to drop the modification by sex.
- She invented a theorem (Noether’s theorem) that united with magisterial concision two conceptual pillars of physics: symmetry in nature and conservation laws.
- Her dissertation in algebraic math earned her a doctorate summa cum laude in 1908.
- The University of Erlangen honored her memory, and in that city a coed gymnasium specializing in math was named for her.
